When a long Island couple wanted to find a small house in the city that would fit their lives, they turned to Italian architect and designer Achille Salvagni. His first complete project in the United States, he brought a distinctly European feel to the Central Park Residence.
Salvagni started his career in Rome, but also worked in Sweden and was influenced by a passion for using organic design and natural shapes like Alvar Aalto, which made the use of natural shapes his soul.
This approximately 1,500 square foot Central Park residential project is located on Fifth Avenue facing Central Park. Boasting stunning views, it is the highlight of the place, which truly embodies the maxim: location, setting, view. Salvagni felt that the most important thing was to echo the beauty of nature outside, while inside there were beautiful textures and shapes.
Salvagni created the layout of the apartment building, with three main destinations accessible from the main foyer. In the living room, a balance is created between the kitchen entrance on the left and the foyer on the right, using dark lines to connect all Spaces. Three main areas flow organically: the "night" area contains the master bedroom, bathroom and closet; The living area is connected to a den that can be used as a guest bedroom; The kitchen and dining area is an open room that extends the view to the center of the space.
The furniture and color scheme create a relaxed environment that echoes the chic and attitude of the client. When the hostess walks around the space in a pastel dress, scarf, shoe or handbag with bright colors, it adds a different color scheme to the whole space. Salvagni does the same in design details, such as persimmon pillows in the living room, red in the artwork, and sheet color in the bedroom.
Salvagni also went to his native Rome, hired the best craftsmen and stonemasons, took inspiration from the tradition, and worked with them to turn it into the new language of the future. Conical desk lamps made of agate and bronze, shaped like tree branches, undulating mirrors with organic lines, and curving seductive lampshades all speak to the natural beauty of Central Park outside their Windows.
