This newly built property is an elegant fusion of traditional crafts and materials with contemporary design, fulfilling the clients’ brief for a modern, sustainable home with practical yet beautiful interiors.
The building comprises three interlinked structures enclosed by a flint wall. The house takes inspiration from the local vernacular, with flint, black timber, clay tiles and roof pitches referencing the historic buildings in the area.
Timber is a constant presence throughout the house. At its heart lies a green oak timber-framed barn, creating a warm and inviting hub that seamlessly connects the living, kitchen, and ancillary spaces. This oak frame, inspired by the historic barn previously on the site, provides a cosy yet spacious atmosphere. Daylight filters through the intricate timber framework, softly illuminating the clay plaster walls.
Floor-to-ceiling glass panels along the south-facing wall offer sweeping landscape views and open onto the terrace, inspired by the large openings in traditional agricultural buildings and designed to frame key vistas. Roof lights above the kitchen provide even, natural north light throughout the day.
The timber-framed structure, utilizing sustainably sourced timber, embodies a blend of modern and traditional technologies and acts as a carbon sink. The restored timbers of the adjacent pottery studio, refurbished from the original barn, add a unique, rich wood and honey scent to the space. Flint, sourced from the South-East of England by skilled flintworkers, was used for the exterior walls. Natural clay plaster was used for interior walls.
The home features triple-glazed timber and aluminum windows, manufactured without PU foam. It is heated by an air-source heat pump with Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Exchange. A Photovoltaic Panel array with a Power Wall allows the home to operate off-grid. The design utilizes the natural sloping site to inform changes in levels throughout the house.
McLean Quinlan prioritized the clients’ lifestyle, creating spaces for both social gatherings and quiet work. The design seamlessly integrates private and communal areas, ensuring a balance between sociability and privacy. Beyond the visual appeal, the restored timbers of the pottery studio provide a unique sensory experience, filling the space with a rich wood and honey scent.
