Sussex Street

Mim Design have completed Sussex Street Apartments in Melbourne’s Bayside suburb of Brighton. Flanked by both panoramic city and bay views, the apartments embody a sense of informal luxury that resonates with the urban beach locale, both a considered representation of their idyllic position and sophisticated residents.

An enduring sculptural form by architects Powell & Glenn inspired the juxtaposition of soft, organic lines throughout the interior. An understated palette and rounded lines reference designers of the 1930s and 1960s, evoking an overall sense of calm. Finer details inspired by the likes of sculptor Alexander Calder and painter John Coburn draw the eye, with asymmetrical curves in the walls and certain fixtures providing connection and movement through rooms.

A minimal grey palette with subtle tonal variation is layered with monolithic slabs of savior limestone, mixed metals and timber. Injections of earthy colour work as an accent, restrained to furnishings and artwork sourced from vintage furniture retailers Modern Times and Luke Furniture. Rugs from Halcyon Lake add depth and tactility against highly polished water stone plaster surfaces and wide timber floorboards. Pieces from Cult Design were selected for their ability to traverse the line between art and function, while a thoughtful assembly of décor objects add interest without overpowering the tranquil ambience.
