Abid Javed creating collectable ‘molecular objects’.With a background in Molecular Biology, the collections and objects bring in the unseen world to the forefront, with an aim to build a spiritual connection. The body of work places itself in between functional and sculptural, focusing on form and the natural state of the clay body.
Also running through Javed’s work are influences from Islamic art and geometry, Arabic calligraphy and 20th-century European artists, most notably Jean Arp, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Pablo Picasso. That is to say, Javed’s work is rich and multi-faceted, bringing together art and science, East and West, creative expression and skillful craft in totally original and unexpected ways.
“My ceramic work is somehow interconnected in such a way that the more my scientific understanding develops, I think that also informs the development of my work in ceramics as well, which is really interesting. Choose to leave the range of clays works with unglazed, because I want the clay bodies to take centre stage.”
