The small town of Priorat in Catalonia, Spain, has always been a secret place that wine lovers yearn for. It is surrounded by a hill and vineyards. When we step into this land, we will stop for a building here - the Gran Hotel Mas d 'en Bruno Boutique Resort Hotel. It is like a letter from Priorato, waiting to be opened.
This resort hotel with 24 suites was designed by Astet Studio, a well-known design studio in Barcelona. It stands quietly in the valley, avoiding the hustle and bustle of the city, without excessive "design", as if it had always belonged here - like a grape seed sleeping in the soil, awakened by time and growing into a new form.
As a quiet settlement, it is a response to regional culture, natural landscapes and architectural aesthetics. Astet Studio draws inspiration from the rich winemaking history and natural landscapes of the local area to build a dialogue that transcends time. Some parts of the hotel are in a deep wine red color derived from wine, which is ingeniously dotted among the furniture and details, creating an elegant and local atmosphere.
The main building of the hotel was originally an 18th-century manor. The designer retained its original stone masonry structure and repeatedly applied the classic "arch" element on the building facade to the interior, forming a natural transition between Spaces and strengthening the visual and structural coherence, reflecting Astet Studio's exquisite interpretation of "time". When you walk to every corner within the space, it feels like traveling through time.
Based on the preservation of historical relics, more restrained and serene contemporary materials such as raw wood, plaster and stone are ingeniously introduced. Through the contrast and integration of old and new materials, a spatial atmosphere that is "quiet yet powerful" is created. The "studio building", as an extension of the main structure, continues this material logic, keeping the entire hotel consistent in language and rich in layers.
The restaurant with a deep wine red base is a highly flexible space that can meet different usage scenarios, just like the red wine of Priorato, reserved yet full-bodied. The seats, lamps and furnishings all have a dignified yet gentle temperament. Even the choice of porcelain continues a philosophical view of "being nourished by the land". The meals produced are like a stage specially built for the senses, creating a full-sensory experience.
The library is a charming space, with a low-key yet exquisite design. Natural oak bookshelves, classic vintage furniture and carefully designed lighting create a relaxed atmosphere, encouraging guests to immerse themselves in reading or engage in in-depth communication with others. This peaceful and warm space is just like the theme pursued behind the design - slow down and feel the present.
When I woke in the morning, the sun streamed into my room through the arched Windows, and the air was filled with the smell of earth and vegetation. The guest room is as quiet as a meditation room. The walls are decorated with natural stuct and stone, the oak floor is warm and soft, and red marble is dotted among them, just like the wine nurtured by this land - steady, rich and layered.
Each guest room is a refuge for contemplation and relaxation. The combination of high-quality materials and warm yet restrained tones creates a timeless sense of comfort. The arched wall has the function of dividing space, allowing a sense of flow and privacy to coexist. The design of the open bathroom breaks the traditional boundaries, allowing the natural scenery to become part of the interior.
The spa is not only a place to rest, but also an architectural dialogue about "the old and the new". The 18th-century stone wall discovered during construction has been completely preserved, with warm contemporary materials surrounding it, giving a sense of "the old times being tenderly embraced". Bathing in it, it feels as if one has entered the scene of another century.
Stepping out of the hotel, the outdoors blends naturally with the hills and grapevines. One can go jogging along the forest path in the early morning and enjoy the rosy glow on the terrace at dusk. Guests can experience nature here and establish a deeper connection with it. It gives you freedom as well as peace.
