Villa Chams

Villa Chams is situated in one of Lebanon's remote driest and oldest natural landscapes, from flora to Roman temples, incorporating the characteristics of its surroundings and presenting itself as a melodic natural storyteller. Seen from a distance, the shell structure sits horizontally on the ground, respectfully blending with carefully preserved rocks, olive trees and other flora against a distant mountain backdrop. Upon closer inspection, the occasionally equidistant walls and columns form a rhythmic flow on a basic grid, creating both introverted Spaces and open extensions.

The floor of the pool is rough terrazzo, a blend of natural mineral aggregates that exudes a grounding effect and massages the feet. The water flows through the concrete column like a river, cutting through the surrounding rock to create a gentle resting space with views not only of nearby plants, but also of the mountains and sky in the distance.

The rooms are naturally outfitted with cast earth concrete walls, stone, light and views of layers that exude a sensual balance of earth. The music and reading rooms are designed on the lower ground level to further internalize their functions and open up an outdoor glass view at eye level. The bathroom is fully illuminated by skylights, and the smooth floor-to-ceiling walls of rock contrast further enhance the soothing sound of the water. To further reflect the living nature of the house, it is encouraging to note that some of the materials have changed colour aesthetics over the natural wear and tear of time.

Baalabek's seasonality adds another dimension to the built environment. Dry and sunny days can be enjoyed in shady places and cooled rocks, while cold mystery nights can be stargazing by the heated pool fireplace. The house has been carefully designed in all its elements to release the many sensory layers of nature, radiating a sense of harmony and tranquility, a solemn rest.
