Penthouse VV is a renovated rooftop apartment in the heart of Ghent by Carlos Kint Architects design, offering an exceptional view of the city's historic towers. The client asked a secluded, meditative retreat -an escape tothe bustling city life-witha strong focus on natural light. Realizing this in two, dark adjacent properties, an old studio and a smaller apartment, with the permission to merge them, made the assignment only more challenging.

When approached by clients for an interior assignment, carlos kint architectuur always aims to improve the project also architecturally, rather than merelyadding high-end finishes on the original place. Here, the first improvement was immediately clear. Theoriginalfaçade facing the old town consisted of a brick wall with smallwindows. These were replaced by floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall sliding windows, flooding the interior with daylight.

The second improvement , an old, narrow outdoor space, traditionally used to store rubbish, was transformed intoa green patio. Here, too, glass wallswere provided, maximizingnatural lightin the adjacent rooms. The patio was enriched with a variety of tall, wild plants, creating a lush, green oasis within the penthouse. This addition provides both tranquility and privacy while maintaining visual connectionbetween different spaces.

The third intervention followed directly from the client's wishfor an open loft-like space.By removing all, non-load-bearing walls, the brutal concrete structure emerged. The lower side of these beams wasdeliberately highlighted throughout the penthouse. Besides creating a harmonious whole, it also enhances the volumetric and architectural character by generating an interplay of blocks and beams.

This approach seamlessly connected the interior designwith the architectural improvements. A mutedpalette of warm brown tones was chosento create a cohesive atmosphere. The structuralblocks and beams were all coated in light brownnatural lime, accentuating their raw character. Custom-designedcupboards and bespoke, freestandingfurniturewere crafted fromdark brown, brushed oak, adding depth and warmth. Additional design accents include seating elements in dark cork and a kitchen island and terrace finished in brown lime cement.

The kitchen island, dining table, and living area were strategically positioned to ensure an uninterrupted view of the historic view, no matter where one stands in these spaces. The central entrance seamlessly connects the living area, bathroom andbedroom, which is situated in the back of the apartmentand faces north.Together, these interventions transformed Penthouse VV into a serene, light-filled sanctuary—an elegant retreat that balances architectural integrity with thoughtful design.
