Santillán Livestock Ranch is located in the heart of Mexico's Bajío region, between Tequisquiapan and La Laja—a cattle-raising area steeped in tradition, with landscapes reminiscent of José María Velasco’s paintings.
The commission involved building a tienta ring and an equestrian training area for the ranch. From the outset, the goal was to integrate the project into the terrain—not as an imposed structure, but as an extension of the landscape.
With this intention, the site chosen was the angle formed by an existing natural slope, which was used to accommodate part of the ring. The integration of the rest of the arena into the terrain was achieved by means of a gentle slope that extends the prairie’s topography, allowing the complex to blend visually with its surroundings.
Access to the ring is via a staircase that descends following the curve of the arena. This path passes through a tunnel designed to protect two old mesquite trees and leads to a semi-sunken courtyard shaded by them, with a small fountain that provides freshness and a moment of pause. From there, one enters the breeders' box, where the tienta is directed. This space features a large window that frames the wall of the ring in the foreground and, in the background, the monumental silhouette of the Peña de Bernal. On one side, there is a discreet wine cellar, and on the other, access to the main burladero and the ring.
In addition to the main burladero, the ring has three additional burladeros with access stairs. All were designed aligned with the diameter of the wall, allowing for smooth and safe movement of the animals during work. The cows are led from the toriles (underground enclosures) through a clever gate system that enables agile and orderly handling. The guiding axis of this route is an underground tunnel along several sections. On the other hand, horse access is through the horse courtyard, which connects to the stables and has a resting wall equipped with anchored rings.
Throughout the project, the aim was to create timeless architecture—almost like a contemporary ruin—capable of aging with dignity and highlighting the nobility of stonework.
