Danny Lane
Since the beginning of my working life I have sought the route of least resistance. Decay is inherent in these materials and this is a quality I don’t neglect.
American born Danny Lane (b.1955) has been working in London since the 1980s and is one of the most commissioned artists working in glass today. He has established an international reputation for his extraordinary sculpture and furniture, which challenge the boundaries of art and design. Danny Lane’s work is in museums, private and corporate collections world-wide.
In 1981, inspired by the precedents set within the Applied Arts by 20th century artists such as Isamo Naguchi, Danny established his first London studio and began to develop applied arts objects using inexpensive industrial glass. By the mid 80’s Lane’s understanding of context, direct use of materials and the unity of the contradictory materials and forms used in his work established him as a key figure within the international design arena to such an extent that a number of his designs are produced by Fiam Italia.
Danny Lane’s sculptures exploit the strength of glass under compression and combine feats of design and engineering to produce work, breathtaking in its apparent simplicity. He uses the refractive and reflective qualities of his media to challenge expectations, engaging the viewer in a physical and metaphysical dialogue. On a large or small scale, Lane’s works redefine architectural space.
