Melbourne design Studio Flack Studio has created Gabriel Cafe in Fitzroy, a surprising leisure space in the Fitzroy district of Melbourne, Australia. Gabriel coffee brand has a long history and it always reminds people of many good moments. Flack Studio has created a bright, vibrant and welcoming space for local brand Gabriel.
Flack Studio founder David Flack's original design envisioned Gabriel De Clieu drinking coffee in a mid-1930s cafe, inspired by furniture and textiles from Jean Royere's period.
David Flack borrows from Melbourne local artist Patrick Dagg's Work King for Phillip to show his appreciation of the abstract art style, breaking down the boundaries between abstraction and image with layers of collage, paint and neon. But he felt it was important to maintain a local party atmosphere, so he set out to revitalize the Fitzroy brand with a greater sense of responsibility.
Throughout the vibrant space, materials, patterns and colors collide. Red contrasts with dark green, deep Burgundy and pink stone, raw steel, brass, impact coloured marble, granite and travertine. With so many layers in such a small space, each approach is full of surprises and many details and moments worth examining.
In the end, Flack Studio created a space that feels like it's suspended in time, and at the same time, it's a great place to humbly sip your first coffee. Gabriel, on a relatively limited budget, has a well-designed space that is fun to explore, both for regulars and those looking for new experiences.
