Award-winning Australian design Studio Flack Studio has showcased their design for the 1930s Potts Point Residence, ensuring continuity with the city's history, practicality and use for the owners' contemporary living needs.
The design studio drew inspiration and inspiration from the opera House's white curved staircase, whose continuous carved wooden handrails extend from the basement to the roof terrace, a nod to the low-key beach lifestyle of the 1950s.
Like many of Flack Studio's projects, Potts Points is a testament to the fusion of art and contemporary design, offset by hand-finished original brass and marble, attracting a decorative feel that connects the home to Sydney's heyday.
The wine room is painted deep eucalyptus green to balance out the 'Vati Cano Marble' and 'Verde St Devis' floor tiles, while the basement pool has cinematic black and white striped tiles and soft green walls that immediately evoke that decorative period.
In this project, Flack Studio honored the home's simple and classic forms, allowing finishes and materials to create tangible depth. This can be seen in the kitchen, where two different types of stone, as well as wood and brass, contrast with the handmade Moroccan tiles, while the bench shows the negative space that captures the light.
Similarly, marble handbasins and floors in the powder room are connected to bespoke pink fanned wood paneling and are offset by a fluted glass wall that hides a 'floating' garden.
