Located in Bilbao, Spain, the Guggenheim Museum is a museum of modern and contemporary art designed by Frank Gehry. The museum was opened by King Juan Carlos I of Spain on 18 October 1997 and features 250 works of contemporary art. It is one of several museums owned by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and focuses on permanent and visiting works by Spanish and international artists. It is one of the largest museums in Spain. The building is one of the most admired works of contemporary architecture, hailed as "an iconic moment in architectural culture" because it represents "one of those rare moments when critics, scholars and the public are completely united on something", says architecture critic Paul Goldberger. In the 2010 World Architecture Survey, the museum was most frequently named as one of the most important works by architecture experts since 1980.
