Lana Launay is an Australian born lighting designer, artist and maker, currently working between Sydney and Los Angeles. Her exploration with lighting presents a fusion of artisanal skills acquired from study and experimentation through visual arts, sculpture, textile design, and jewellery making. She draws inspiration from the architectural influences and diverse landscapes that formed her. She produces distinctive and unconventional lighting for various projects, including contemporary exhibitions, commercial projects, residential commissions, and collaborative partnerships.

For lighting designer Lana Launay, the seed for her practice was planted in childhood. Her father, a composer with a taste for mood lighting, constantly commissioned lamps for their home—he worked with fabricators to make shades from textiles and metals. After moving back to Sydney from New York City during the pandemic and leaving her jewelry design career behind, Launay started making her own lampshades, following her father’s footsteps because there was nothing on the market that excited her.

Lana Launay is also a talented creative with a refreshing perspective on lighting. Crafted from natural textiles and recycled materials,Lana Launa works are sculptural and unique, using various weaving and stitching methods. Lana’s work feels both known and unknown. Her lamps are an event in and of themselves, a joyful mix of paper and beads. There is something childlike and playful about these designs and yet they are completely sophisticated. This contradiction in terms is what makes Lana’s work continually interesting, diverse and, a pleasure to have in store.
