Russian Hill Townhouse is a architecturally significant three bedroom family home located on Russian Hill in San Francisco. The original John Bricknell Victorian building was built in 1866 and was transformed into a classic Italianate building in 1916 by architect Julia Morgan, who designed it for renowned art importer David Atkins. It has recently been upgraded to be earthquake-resistant and carefully installed with 21st-century amenities, while respecting Ms. Morgan's attention to detail and craftsmanship.
The owners, who have three children, wanted the space to feel like a proper family home, but to maintain their authentic aesthetic as creatives. They needed a new kitchen, bathroom and master bedroom, as well as open, modern and child-friendly Spaces. But the client also asked Nicole Hollis to modernise the house while maintaining its original "soul". Hollis achieves this by combining color, pattern and light with traditional materials such as wood, which appear in various forms throughout the home, including large and ornate hardwood floors.
As a historic building, the house already has character, and the challenge for Nicole Hollis was to modernize the interior while keeping the original soul of the structure intact. Among the structural changes to the house, Hollis transformed the banquet hall into the master bedroom, one of her favorite designs, which was a challenge worth taking up despite the small storage space.
There are no closets in the master bedroom, so Nicole Hollis envisioned two copper volumes to create a warm reflection in the room and to combine the closet, TV and headboard wall. In this way, it is like "floating" in the storage space without drastically changing the structure of the original space, and ensuring that the original herringbone floor and antique fireplace are preserved.
