Envisioned as a holiday home for the Client and his extended family in the serene mountainous ranges of Khao Yai, Thailand. The brief called for an essence of spaciousness, airiness and open-plan living within a home to instil a sense of openness and tranquillity. This was due to the Client’s aversity to small and claustrophobic spaces. Preferring landscapes over artwork, the Client also desired an architecture that borrowed the vast landscapes of the site, one constantly in relation with nature. One that is unique and respectfully responds to the quaint thematic context, a sanctuary that is both private and secure as well.

Known for its rich biodiversity and largely unblemished mountainous landscape, the site of Khao Yai is a popular local retreat destination defined by farm ranches and a National Park that can be overlooked adjacently from the site. Hence, inspired by the natural contours that define this breath-taking site, the architectural vision thus unfolds like a story of fluidity. Conceived as layers of shifting planes, each floor plane mirrors the graceful dance of the land, seamlessly merging and is contiguous with its undulating terrain. As if drawn by the hand of nature itself, every floor is akin to an extension of the earth it rests upon. As a result, the axis of the house constantly shifts with the ebbs and flows of nature, creating unexpected spatial experiences. Here, the boundaries between indoors and outdoors blur, inviting the beauty of Khao Yai to permeate every corner of the abode.

For our discerning Client who values the allure of the modern over the trappings of traditional architecture, a modern palette was curated to blend seamlessly with the natural canvas of Khao Yai. Neutral-toned off-form concrete and timber accents form the backbone of the architectural expression. These materials, chosen not for their opulence but for their innate elegance, serve as a canvas upon which the drama of the surrounding landscape unfolds. Each element is carefully selected to complement, rather than compete with, the breath-taking landscape that stretch beyond the walls.

An orchestration of form and function, the home was thoughtfully divided into two wings unified by sweeping shingled roof planes shaped echo the contours of the distant mountains. The Main wing houses the main living, dining and the sanctuary of both master and children suites. Here in the communal main living and dining spaces, boundaries between indoor and outdoor dissolve. Spaces flow onto the pool deck where the expansive vista of the Khao Yai Mountain Range unfolds like a living tapestry. Upstairs, privacy takes precedence as bedrooms angle away from each other, offering a sanctuary of solitude amidst the panoramic views of the landscape beyond where each room is a sanctuary unto itself, nestled within nature’s grandeur. On the other side of the entry court, the guest wing beckons with its intimate scale and quiet allure.
