Rothko Chapel Designed by Philip Johnson       Rothko Church is a nondenominational church in Houston, Texas, founded by John and Dominique de Menil. The interior is not only a church, but also a major work of modern art. Fourteen black but brightly colored paintings by Mark Rothko sit on the walls. The shapes of the buildings, the octagon carved on the Greek cross and the design of the chapel were heavily influenced by the artists. The chapel is located in a suburban neighborhood two miles southwest of the city, between the building housing the Menil Collection and St. Basil's Chapel on the campus of St. Thomas University. About 55,000 people visit the church each year.Rothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip JohnsonRothko Chapel Designed by Philip Johnson
