Villa Waalre

Waalre is a municipality in the province of Brabant in the southern Netherlands, just outside Eindhoven. The Villa Waalre by London-based architecture firm Russell Jones sits amid a landscape of forested dunes. The extensive fir trees give the area a unique image. Since the Limburg coal mine used to need timber to support the mine, so people afforested extensively, and finally formed this forest.

The Villa Waalre was built on a 7,000-square-metre plot of land once owned by Anton Philips's son-in-law Frans Otten. At the beginning of the design, the sand dunes of the original site along its western boundary and the gardens planted with 50-year-old vegetation influenced the location, orientation and form of the new villa.

The local planning authority knew the history and background of the original house and wanted the design of the new building to make the previous villa look new. The new building design will take advantage of the existing natural features of the site to create a special relationship between the building and the environment.

In the end, Villa Waalre covers an area of approximately 1,200 square meters and is divided into four levels, with the landscape divided into two distinct levels. The living Spaces are made up of a series of north-south walls that occupy the ground floor of the building. The bedroom and corridor Spaces are planned in an east-west rectangular structure that straddles the partition between the landscape and the living area.

Russell Jones built a large garage under the west dune, connected to the street beyond, and a 25m swimming pool under the house. The 'cave' patio in the building acts as a pool of water into which light from the roof flows to form its natural lighting.
