In the lush green valley below Table Mountain in one of Cape Town's oldest and most beautiful areas, SAOTA and ARRCC worked together to design this large and solid home for a large family.  

The mansion with gardens is shaped like a trapezoid and the gently sloping site is like a trapezoid, so SAOTA placed the house on a raised platform along the street boundary, creating space for a large, uninterrupted front garden and maximizing mountain views. The complementary wings of the building are more visible from the front garden than from the back of the house. The exterior finishes and colours are characterised by a strong contrast between natural light colours and textures of wood and natural stone, with the pool's black marble anchoring the base of the house. The metallic emphasis on window frames, pergola and other shading devices accentuates the distinction between architectural elements through the sheer use of materials.    

ARRCC's interior design maintains a low-key tone, brightened by the bold green of the surrounding landscape visible through glass openings. Natural tones and textures, emphasizing subtle but charming metals and key design elements. A bespoke curved sofa in the living room also gives a more feminine sculptural form to the angular architectural space, while promoting versatility and multiple directions of use.    

The subtle tension between glamour and laid-back luxury is further expressed in the tailored details, where the gold scatter layer adds interest but does not distract the eye, which remains the main focus. Upstairs, silver tones dominate and distinguish the characters from the cream tones downstairs on this floor. Wood paneling is used in the floor and ceiling of the bedroom as well as some walls and screens to create a warm, cocoon-like feel.
