Knitted Light
I want to fill up those brief, empty spaces,They can be filled up with emotional Or visual stories,Even with new realizations.
Sangmin Oh is a South Korean artist, born in 1994. Sangmin Oh graduated from the Design Academy in Eindhoven and in 2021 he established his own design&art studio in in Netherlands and Korea. He is influenced by sculptural crafts, textile techniques, color of explored materials and architectural elements. He focuses on observing trivial and small empty spaces, aside from spaces that are displayed amongst people's daily hectic movements.
Thiscoral reef knitting project is based on combining yarns that respond to light in differentways. The great beauty of textiles is in the many atmospheres, shapes, colors, harmonies, and effects that can be created through these unexpected yarn combinations togetherinteracting with light. Sangmin Oh hopes that‘Knitted Light’not only presents thephenomenal beauty oflight through objects composed of textile materials, but also enlightens a new reflection of thebeauty of our nature.
The different sources of light that the textile can be exposed to realize many layers to itsmaterial. In daylight, it remains as a sculpture, we observe the natural colors, patterns, and textures. When exposed to an artificial light the textile changes to produce a newbeauty and dimension. On removing the light, in darkness, the textile glows, it producesits own light resembling the glowing coral reefs, we observe the patterns and shapesagain with nuance.
