New York-based design studio Selma Akkari and London-based design studio Rawan Muqaddas have renovated Amity Street Residence in a 20th-century building in Brooklyn, New York, adding warm and natural materials to the space, Make it a "simple but warm" New York apartment.

Located on the fourth floor of a 1910 building, Amity Street Residence overlooks a quiet but central corner of the city at the intersection of Amity and Clinton Streets. Selma Akkari collaborated with Rawan Muqaddas on the interior design of this 1,400-square-foot home, which was upgraded from an apartment "that would go unnoticed" to a space filled with warm colours.

As part of the renovation, the studio rearranged the rooms to create space for an additional third bedroom if needed. In their design, both studios wanted to preserve the essence of the building from 1910 and reinterpret the original traditional details. Because the apartment's previous owners had called it home for decades, layers of history and neglected areas were left behind.

The two studios transformed the single-storey apartment into a piggy Hi with an open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area. Some original features, such as decorative cornice and bold skirting boards, have been reinterpreted. The living area now has two large bay Windows with views across the street that were previously obscured.

The floor of the apartment is covered in warm wood, while the walls are painted a milky neutral color. Several modern chairs frame the Windows, allowing the occupants to enjoy the street view. Soft oak floors, cream-colored walls contrasting with dark stone and colorful wooden bookshelves use a warm color palette to unify the space. The den is located at the back of the room and can easily be replaced with a third bedroom if necessary.
