The interior experience of Ember Bath House is tactile, transporting, restorative and grounded, a journey of self-care where the rites and ritual of bathing can be held. Inspired by ancient bathing practices. A sensorial journey, from the moment you step through the threshold, into the deepness of the space, a quietness holds space for you, energy softens.
Ember Bath House worked closely with the designers, Studio Traces, Creative Director Tracy Zorich and Interior Designer Phoebe Allen, for over 18 months, from an initial concept vision, taking brutalist and sensorial cues from site, with its large concrete warehouse walls and vast ceilings. The designers worked in a close and collaborative process with Embers founders, together with the build team, allowing for moments of true intuition to flow and guide the hands-on creative process. Embers brief included cold and warm mineral plunge pools, steam room, Finnish sauna and spa treatment rooms.
Darkness and Lightness, a focus of the studio's creative concept, is manifest through the interplay of light and shadows cast on anchor rocks, placed at transitional moments within the spatial experience, guiding the wellness journey. Intimate spaces are designed with cave-like darkness to facilitate calm. The wellness offering is inspired by ancient bathing rituals such as; Onsen and Hammam, complemented by Ayurvedic massage treatments. Truly a sanctuary to feel held through the therapeutic quality of water and the absence of time.
Ember Bath House spatially has created a haven for the innate need for humans to feel held. An environment where the nervous system relaxes, and we soften into ourselves. Design has an ability to effect this experience within us, Tracy says, when holistic detailing, together with envisioning the emotive response of the client, how the darkness, lightness, materiality and volume of space connect to us within. It is this deep level of understanding, an almost energy connection to the end user, that is the mark, or the future thinking for an interior to contribute to wellness, that is exceptional.
