DH Residence is an apartment with sea view on the 4th floor of an apartment building at the Belgian coast. This holiday home is designed by Vincent Van Duysen Architects to have a place to relax and to spend quality time with the family.
The client’s request was to create a quiet, serene space. To achieve this, all functional elements—such as kitchen appliances and storage—were concealed within custom-designed volumes. These volumes are positioned so that the natural light from the large windows floods the apartment.
The apartment’s entrance leads to a hallway separated from the living space by a wooden volume, which organizes the flow of the apartment. The living room, dining area, and master bedroom are oriented towards the sea. At the rear of the apartment are two large children's bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom for added privacy.
The open kitchen blends into the living room. The island – the core of the cooking nook – has been fully rendered as a monolith made of exquisite natural stone. All appliances and even the sink hidden behind wooden cabinet doors to maintain a clean, uncluttered look when not in use.
Materials were selected to evoke a fresh, sunny atmosphere. Light sandstone floors with refined details and textured veining reflect the coastal environment, while the walls, finished in textured plaster, add subtle depth. The wooden volumes, such as the kitchen and storage, are crafted from light chestnut wood, bringing warmth without overwhelming the airy, open feel of the space.
DH Residence merges functionality with a sense of calm and openness. Its clever design and natural materials create a peaceful environment, perfect for a family retreat by the sea.
