Aires Mateus Architecture

Aires Mateus Architecture is an architectural practice based in Lisbon, Portugal, founded in 1988 by two brothers, Manuel Aires Mateus and Francisco Aires Mateus. The firm aims to maintain an open understanding of architecture and realize its core essence in order to create thought-provoking architecture in contemporary Portugal.

Manuel Aires Mateus, born in Lisbon in 1963, graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon in 1986. He began working with architect Goncalo Byrne in 1983 and began developing projects with his brother Francisco in 1988. The increase in the size of their work has led them to build a larger, more autonomous space to meet demand.

The Aires Mateus project has been dealing with the role of memory and knowledge, as well as the relationship between the physical and cultural worlds. The work attempts to reflect every scale involved in them, evoking the will of design. It looks for shapes and eternal states of matter in the continuity of time. Their spatial solution is clear and formally defined, while emphasizing resistance and permanence as core qualities of architecture.

To achieve abstract form, their projects are often based on a precise balance between physical and spatial. In these buildings, the facade is defined to give shape to the space by subtracting volume from the main form. Aires Mateus showed their understanding of space as a result of "addition and subtraction, architectural excavation".
