Azuma Architect

Azuma Architect is an architecture and interior design studio based in Tokyo, Japan, founded in 1986 by founder and Architect Rie Azuma. She was born in Osaka in 1959. In 1982, she graduated from the Department of Economics at Nippon Women's University. In 1984, she studied architecture at the University of Tokyo and then went to Cornell University in the United States. Today, Rie Azuma is an internationally renowned architect, and has become the official designer of Japan's top boutique resort brand "Hoshinoya".

Rie Azuma grew up surrounded by books on architecture, but her career in architecture didn't go well. Influenced by her father from an early age, Rie Azuma has accumulated a lot of experience and now she is a well-known architect. She was invited by Mr. Hoshino to help design the Hoshino Hotel, which has since become one of the most famous hotels in the world.

From the age of 6, Rie Azuma has lived in the Tower House, a masterpiece designed by her father, Takamitsu Azuma. In Japan, this house is even more famous than Tadao Ando's magnum opus " Azuma House". It can be said that it is a typical representative of the ultra-small house in Japan and a classic building that remains famous in the history of architecture. In her conception, her father's "avant-garde" is ordinary, while the real ordinary apartment is boring and confusing to her.

As a residential design background, Rie Azuma, under the influence of traditional Japanese culture, advocated that the house should integrate and show the local traditional culture, and then explore more possibilities from the traditional house. There is a difference between physical space and perceived size, she once said. You can't just spend money to build a good house. Her designs often break the established rules and strive to create exciting Spaces.
