Arriving at Kanaal, a symbol of industrial heritage and creative rejuvenation, we found ourselves standing before a tale of reinvention. What began as a modest apartment has since evolved into the bustling heart of Arjaan De Feyter's esteemed design bureau. Intrigued by the fusion of history and innovation, we stepped inside, eager to explore the creative depths that define this space. Our guide, Bob, a passionate designer and colleague of Arjaan, led us on a journey through the studio's history.

Arjaan De Feyter, an accomplished Interior Architect, graduated from the Antwerp Henry Van de Velde Institute in 1999. He started his own design bureau virtually immediately afterwards, combining this. Since 2006 he also holds a teaching position in Interior Design at the Department for Architectural Sciences at the University of Antwerp.Specializing in bespoke concepts tailored to individual needs, his portfolio spans private residences, commercial spaces, and art installations, each bearing the hallmark of quiet minimalism. In 2016, the bureau found a permanent location within the historic Kanaal complex, where Arjaan De Feyter has since left his mark with a series of remarkable projects, ranging from silo apartments to transformative office spaces.

It was misty and rainy in Belgium at the end of March. We set out from the RAS restaurant next to the port of Antwerp and drove for about 35 minutes to Catherine Rochtus's studio in the suburbs. As we approached the threshold, a gentle glow flickered at our feet. A solitary candle, nestled in a pool of soft light, beckoning us. Thus, our odyssey commenced, guided by the embrace of a humble flame—a symbol of welcome that ignited our hearts and illuminated the path to boundless wonders awaiting within.

Six years ago, Catherine moved into her current workshop, a blank slate awaiting her creative touch. Collaborating with designers, she meticulously planned every detail, from staircase placement to material choices for doors and furnishings. With a hands-on approach, Catherine selected and crafted furniture herself, incorporating elements like stone table legs for rustic charm. This personal touch imbues the space with warmth and authenticity.

Each piece was a testament to Catherine’s mastery of her craft and her reverence for the beauty of the natural world, namely the Objet Trouvé.

From Hotel August, a tour coach transported us close to the harbour. There we encountered an unassuming building, adorned with a solitary black door. The air was filled with the salty tang of the sea, mingling with the faint scent of aged wood. Drawing closer, we were greeted by Cédric Etienne. Dressed in a flowing black cassock-like garment, his presence exuded a calm. He beckoned us into his world.

Establishing his Studio Corkinho in a heritage building, Cédric embarked on a mission to breathe new life into forgotten spaces, repurposing them into space of tranquility and creativity. He kept considering how to change the energy of the space with little interventions. With each project, he sought to honor the building's history while infusing it with a contemporary aesthetic that celebrated its architectural heritage.

首尔11月的清晨，天气突然转冷，但空气清爽了不少。我们从首尔驱车前往利川（利川是韩国京畿道的一个城市，以传统工艺闻名），历经2个小时来到了Honggu Park的家，与他们一家三口共度了美好的一天。

On a crisp November morning in Seoul, the weather suddenly turned cold, but the air became noticeably fresher. We drove from Seoul to Icheon, a city in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, renowned for its traditional crafts. After a two-hour journey, we reached the home of Honggu Park and spent a delightful day with him and his family, a party of three.

Honggu Park韩国知名木作大师，作品深受欧洲设计市场的认可，不仅在2023年10月的Define Seoul展览上展览，同年作品也被维多利亚和阿尔伯特博物馆收藏。在38年的工艺探索中，他在传统与创新的交汇点上刻画出了独特的故事：首创Abstract Tanhwa技法。

Honggu Park, a renowned master of woodworking in South Korea, has gained recognition in the European design market. His works were not only exhibited at the Define Seoul exhibition in October 2023 but were also acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in the same year. Over 38 years of artistic exploration, he has crafted a unique narrative at the intersection of tradition and innovation, pioneering the Abstract Tanhwa technique.
