Maverick Lee is an artist and design practitioner whose work is grounded in a material-driven approach to making. Born in Singapore, he has lived and worked in Bali, Indonesia, for nearly three decades. Immersed in the island’s natural environment and craft traditions, Lee has developed an intuitive, process-led practice in which creation emerges through direct, physical engagement with materials rather than through predetermined forms.
His work operates at the intersection of furniture, sculpture, and functional objects, deliberately blurring the boundaries between art and design. Working primarily with materials such as metal, stone, and solid wood—materials that carry a sense of weight and temporality—Lee employs restrained and reductive structures to emphasize density, tactility, and inherent tension. His objects avoid decorative gestures, instead asserting a quiet yet enduring presence in space, allowing materiality itself to become the primary narrative.
Based in his Bali studio, Lee collaborates closely with local artisans and embraces the irregularities and traces of handcraft, ensuring that each work remains singular and unrepeatable. His practice reflects a broader inquiry into time, labor, and the spiritual dimension of matter, positioning his works as functional sculptures—objects that are both usable and contemplative in nature.
