Shayan Gunawan is a multidisciplinary artist and designer based in Bali, whose practice spans sculpture, furniture, and spatial design. Trained at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, she developed a deep sensitivity to visual language and conceptual rigor. Her work emerges from a dialogue between formal discipline and intuitive experimentation, allowing material and form to guide the creative process.

Gunawan’s practice is rooted in an exploration of materiality, craft, and imperfection. Drawing inspiration from traditional techniques and the philosophy of wabi‑sabi, she transforms natural materials such as tropical hardwood, limestone, and reclaimed bricks into sculptural objects that inhabit the space between function and art. Her works balance tactile presence with visual restraint, highlighting the inherent beauty of materials while inviting reflection on temporality and process.

Exhibited internationally and locally, Shayan Gunawan’s creations inhabit a liminal space where design meets art. Collaborating with artisans and studios, she emphasizes the trace of human touch, the integrity of craft, and the poetic potential of everyday materials. Her works challenge conventional boundaries, positioning them as meditative objects that are both functional and profoundly expressive.
