Yinjispace:What was the opportunity for you to found Amelda Wilde Interior Design? Could you please share with us your design background?

Amelda Wilde:I have always been completely enamoured with design. My dream was always to work in fashion or design in some form. I wanted a deep understanding of design and techtonics, so i completed a bachelor of architecture and construction management. Straight after graduating, I was balancing raising a young family, work experience in architecture and education, and then after hours was when I could obsessively immerse myself in my personal creative pursuits - interior design. Fashion, interiors, architecture and art is my constant source of inspiration and a continual source of design development.
Von Leach is my first architecture and ID project and represents some of the formative ideas I have on space, light and legacy.

Yinjispace:You have been working on interior design for many years, so what keeps you excited about this field?

Amelda Wilde:I am a serial homebody, and I my happiest when at home and indoors. Interiors have a profound impact on how we feel, and I believe light and colour in particular have the biggest impact on human experiences. The interior design professional is a continual pursuit of experimenting with colour and finishes to create spaces with an energy and storey telling, which will always be exciting, and something I will never tire of. It’s a dynamic industry which allows creatives to build immersive ideas and deliberate intentions. I am still excited every single time I see a beautifully considered and unique ID project, and crave the palpable delight and rush from each beautiful image.

Yinjispace:How do you achieve the perfect combination of light, quality, color and shape in your works?

Amelda Wilde:I always start with atmosphere. I build a story, or create a list of guiding words and images that describe the feeling, or attitude I would want you to feel in the space. From there I build the neutral palette. Neutrals for me are not whites or beige, but rather that key elements - colour/light/material/narrative that connects all of the spaces. For example Foam House was all about taking guests away from everyday, and playing with nostalgia. Who doesn’t look back on their past with fond memories, and then reflect with elevated wisdom and recollection of these memories. So this narrative started the materiality palette. From here I created my nostalgic palette and continually check in with my guiding narrative. Von Leach Residence was all about light and patina. The existing home so dark and scarred. To amplify this I used non-direct light to boldly light the space, with inward perspective, and honed and polished materials to exacerbate the century old patina and scars of the existing portion of the project.

Yinjispace:In your works, the impact of color is very strong. How do you view the color expression of space?

Amelda Wilde:As mentioned, colour is such a powerful and accessible tool for interior spaces. The dosage and depth can have an intense impact and something that is really exciting to play with. I find the most memorable or impactful spaces have been ones that have experimented with surprising palettes, or been confident in strong choices.

Yinjispace:How do you maintain your fashion sensibility and apply it to your designs?

Amelda Wilde:Fashion is a large part of my inspiration and always finds a way onto my concept boards. Fashion allows people to express themselves, evolve, be daring, have personality and have fun. Fashion can be insightful to how people feel, or the cultural climate, and always revealing details for the person and the designer. Fashion references are so diverse and interesting to find design inspirations - from new collections, to vintage pieces, street style or handmade pieces. Fashion is another example how a story can be built from colour, shape and materiality and incredibly inspiring.

Yinjispace:In your works, many interior decorations use artworks. How do you view the relationship between interior decoration and living art?

Amelda Wilde:Artwork is very revealing to the curator and deeply personal. It can add so much depth and intrigue to a space and something to be considered. As mentioned, I like to start all projects considering the atmosphere and ambiance I would like to create, how you will feel in the space, how it will be used, and how to elevate the experience. Interior design is creating living art, and expression of the designer, who wants to create magic for a client. It’s a challenging art form as there are so many practical constraints - budget, time, quality - but sometimes the constraints create more magic as it makes it more challenging and rewarding.
