Yinterview.107 | Italy x Andrea Tognon

Italy 2023-05-16

Yinjispace:Mr. Tognon comes from a family of furniture makers. Is this one influencing factor for Mr. Tognon being a designer and how does this influence him?

Andrea Tognon:Growing up in such an environment certainly shaped me as a designer and taught me a lot in terms of   knowledge and know-how. On the other side, it also meant I had to break through strong paradigms to let out inherent intuition to free my design approach from a very set framework.

Yinjispace:Your studio has cooperated with many luxury brands. How do you capture the inner quality and value of different brands?

Andrea Tognon:Communication is key. Through carefully listen to and look at who, or which brand, you have in front of   you. When you can meet someone with openness and authenticity is when you have the opportunity for a very special dialogue, it is at this meeting point where one can find that initial spark that causes a chain reaction to foster the right understanding for a good collaboration.

Yinjispace:Your studio was established in New York. Why do you move to Milan in the end?

Andrea Tognon:Having lived 7 years in America, I felt that my European roots where in need of some recalibration and l sensed it was time to return to Italy.

Yinjispace:Your studio has completed projects in Chengdu and Shanghai of China. What kind of experience this is?

Andrea Tognon:From what I have seen, China is a great and dynamic country, always moving forward fast and it is a fascinating place too, so it is always a pleasure to be involved in such an interesting design landscape. We are happy when the public reacts well to our designs and we are looking forward to more colaborations    there in the future.

Yinjispace:What influence do you think ltaly brings to the local designers?

Andrea Tognon:Italy is incredibly rich in history and contains many suggestions tied to the past but not only. Until this day it has remained one of the principal sources of inspiration for me. Since I grew up in Italy, it was formative for my upbringing and so all life experiences and impressions that came later were measured against that frame of reference.

Yinjispace:How to get the iconic elements and typical details by analysing the brand?

Andrea Tognon:The initial approach is often very product focused, we start with analysing the design approach of the brand and interpret it in a very free way, extrapolating certain aspects and seeing where that can take us.

Yinjispace:In commercial project, designers should work on the present and think for the future. How do you achieve the prediction of the future?

Andrea Tognon:By watching and studying the past, roots are essential to go further.

Yinjispace:How  do  you  think  Eclecticism?

Andrea Tognon:In this day and age every information is accessible, everywhere, all the time. There are so many sources     we can simultaneously access and draw inspiration from to feed our imaginations with, that a lot of things happening in the world can reference many different things at the same time. I wonder if eclecticism is     still a style, or if a lot of things happening now are already conceptually eclectic from the start, there could be so many theoretical backgrounds merging together but we might be still searching for the one underlying philosophy or movement of the moment to support it.

Yinjispace:Your project has senses of line and geometry and is very modern. What atmosphere do you wish to create by these elements and what influence does this bring to the people inside?

Andrea Tognon:When someone steps into the space, I want them to feel like they are in a different kind of place. Not different in the sense of intimidating, but quite the opposite. The intention is to provoke a prevailing sentiment of curiosity, which makes you navigate and explore the space with a desire to discover more.
