Electric Bowery is an interior design studio based in California, USA, founded in 2013. They often cooperate with different owners, entrepreneurs and creatives. They are good at listening to the opinions and suggestions of customers and meeting their needs. Through continuous learning and practice, they have a better understanding and understanding of how the lifestyle of people around the world is changing.

Yinjispace:Your studio is located in Venice beach, CA. How does this area inspire you?

Electric Bowery:The city of Venice, California is of course known for its beach atmosphere and connection to its natural surroundings, as well as it’s eclectic roots and artistic, bohemian tradition. In all of Electric Bowery’s projects we connect the landscape to the design and emphasize the scenic surrounding area, but also bring a boldness that is reflective of the individuality of our clients – just like the individuals and creatives who have made Venice the artistic haven that it is. The coastal neighborhood is known for its mix of beach bungalows and experimental architecture, inspiring Electric Bowery to incorporate a modern take on natural designs through materials and textures.

Yinjispace:Your studio has been established for 10 years. In this period, what has changed for you and what has remained a constant?

Electric Bowery:As Electric Bowery is coming up on its ten year anniversary, it is amazing to see how much the studio has evolved over time. The biggest change for the studio has been the recent expansion into a more formal interior design division. It has been a natural evolution of our process, and Electric Bowery is emphasizing an equal focus on architecture and interior design across our hospitality and residential projects.

Since Electric Bowery’s beginnings in 2013, we have always believed that successful design projects should be both approachable and inspiring. To achieve this vision, we celebrate each project's landscape and collaborate with local trades. When designing the recently opened Wildflower Farms, Electric Bowery designed the structures to frame the views of its natural surroundings, including the Shawangunk Ridge. This holistic design approach will always be an identifying quality of Electric Bowery.

Yinjispace:As boundaries fade, how do you balance work and life?

Electric Bowery:We are able to find some balance by relying on one another, and our team – we have three wonderful Directors who oversee the daily operations of the studio. We both have young families and need to find ways to prioritize time with them, so relying on a collaborative approach is key for us. We also try to take advantage of a more flexible schedule to interweave work and life in ways that work for our individual schedules.

Yinjispace:You have combined luxurious, vintage materials with modern style to a stunning effect. How do you explore this? Have you formed this style since the start of your work?

Electric Bowery:Electric Bowery has always approached our projects by fusing luxurious and vintage materials with a modern style, but over time it has evolved. As we have been growing the interior design sector, this process has been elevated to better capture the powerful effect of blending the old with the new. We approach each project with a very conceptual process, finding layers that are true to the nature of the project and our clients’ visions. We refine and connect these layers into something that is both unexpected and yet intrinsically tied to the roots of the project.

Yinjispace:What kind of design is 'organic' to you?

Electric Bowery:Organic to Electric Bowery are environments that foster a sense of purpose and personal well-being. Over time, we have seen a shift in people seeking purpose over profit, as well as more spiritual and emotional fulfillment. Our designs represent nature through color and materiality with experimental influences to express creativity and a feeling of ease in the home setting.

Yinjispace:How do you make a space nurturing to its residents?

Electric Bowery:For each residential project, Electric Bowery strives to create a better life for our clients by focusing on the following principles—purpose, health, and happiness. We are thinkers, listeners, and creators who put the utmost value on collaborating with our clients. At the Victoria Residence, for example, Electric Bowery collaborated with the homeowners on creating an inspired compound with a unique wellness program featuring spaces for yoga, art, and meditation.

Yinjispace:Who are your favorite designers, architects, or creative people from other industries? How do they influence you?

Electric Bowery:We’re currently very inspired by the creative approach outlined in Rick Rubin’s new book which is really grounded in a trust in one’s own creative instincts. We love taking inspiration from interdisciplinary media and unexpected sources. From the rich unfolding of an unexpected plot in “Beef” to the endlessly surprising combinations of flavors from Ottolenghi, we look to these sources for methodologies that can be applied to any creative endeavor. As for fellow designers we are always inspired by Studio Giancarlo Valle and Studio Shamshiri and their integrated approaches to interior design, with a sophisticated formal and tonal approach that translates to a range of architectural vernaculars.
