Spanish firm OOAA Architecture is known for their minimal designs and neutral color palettes. The spaces they create have carefully thought out geometric structures, line proportions and circular materials. Here are exclusive interview with founder and designer Iker Ochotorena.

Yinji：What situations would inspire you to start a design? Which quality is the most important for you?

OOAA：Specific situations that need to be solved in terms of architecture needs. The most important fact for me is to listen to my intuition and to translate it immediately into the plans, avoiding focusing on the single parts.

Yinji：What do you find has been the largest influence on your work?

OOAA：My father. He is an architect too and I was able to learn and discuss with him about art and architecture since I was very little.

Yinji: Whenever I watch your works, it is like appreciating a beautiful poem. How do you achieve the perfection of your works? Especially the embodiment of minimalism in your works.

OOAA: Thank you. I think that minimalism has to do with the composition of both the architecture and the furniture, its balance and imbalance, so the project process is made from the whole to the parts. When we compose the whole/totality, we create minimalism.

Yinji：There are a lot of geometric languages and the introduction of light in your works. What kind of life do you want to express by combining these elements?

OOAA：An easy life, not far-fetched.

Yinji：Every work of OOAA is excellent. Out of all the projects you have done is there a favorite project and why? How do you manage your team and improve OOAA’ work?

OOAA：Thank you! Baleares. Because of its size and great achievements in terms of architecture. I have 3 teams and we often have project meetings. Also, we usually meet to develop our OOAA speech, a speech about what comfort, proportions, etc... are for us.

Yinji：The color used in each of your works is also very wonderful. Could you explain some methods of color matching to us?

OOAA：In general terms, we like neutral colours because they transmit calm and serenity, and particularly we like to superimpose neutral colours “tone on tone” to emphasize the forms and shadows, in order to not let anything outstand specially.

Yinji：It is convenient for you to reveal your recent plans and outlook for OOAA.

OOAA：My plan for OOAA is to make bigger and bigger projects.
