Yinterview.031 | Mexican Design Studio PPAA

Mexico 2021-04-15

PPAA is an architecture and interior design studio in Mexico founded by Pablo Perez Palacios. The studio was very careful in its choice of materials, preferring to use raw and natural materials, and they were really inspired by nature. They believe that architecture is based on intention, concept, feeling, atmosphere, in other words, ideas, but with these so-called ideas, it is really a building that expresses meaning or ideas.

Yinji: How was PPAA born? What design philosophy have you been insisting on? What kind of thinking does a thoughtful architecture represent?
PPAA:It all began with a competition we won 12 years ago and after 10 years of working with a partner and as PPAA has been always a research office that emerges from a very strong intuition and philosophy towards an architecture based on ideas not forms.

Yinji: How do you see the relationship between design and materials? What is your favorite material? How to judge which space is suitable for which material?
PPAA:The materials we use are always natural ,we believe in an honest architecture we do not cover o hide things .For the materials are part of the conceptual intention and we us the in a very sensitive way.

Yinji: What influence does Peter Zumthor's work have on your design? How do you understand Peter Zumthor's design? How do you see the relationship between nature and design?
PPAA:For us Zumthor is an architect that we have very present specially on his concept of time and atmosphere , and nature its our most inspiration source.

Yinji: How do you see the difference between Mexican design and Oriental design?
PPAA:They can be very different in form but actually see a lot of coincidences the reference they both look back to their traditions and way of doing things , it artisanal methods etc. and reflect our local culture, environment, and national identity.
