Ynterview

Yinji: Young designers are bound to become the backbone of the future design force. How did you get the chance to start your design career? What are your expectations for your future?
Xie: Keep a passion for thinking about the relationship between city, space and people. From studying art major to environmental art design and finally becoming a design worker, I have never thought about the career other than design, which is very simple and integrates the work of design into my life. Therefore, I can spend most of my time in the design event. The most fun and enjoyable part of a design job should be the problem-solving process, because when will the problem come? What's the problem? Everything is in an unstable state, which requires us to keep thinking, and I like an unknown state.

Yinji: Who are your favorite architects/designers? How has he influenced your design or career?
Xie: There are many design masters I like, such as Louis Kahn, Ando, Mies, Zumthor and so on. The Japanese architect, Junya Ishigami. The distinctive personal characteristics and artistic tendency make people moved by the process of building architecture and nature, which has gone beyond the attention to space to reflect the emotional level. These architects have one thing in common, they all adhere to a kind of building spirit, which is both our example and our spiritual food.

Yinji: We noticed that your work promotes minimalism. What do you think of minimalism?
Xie: Minimalism. In the system of building space, they are all a form of materialization of emotion. Whether it is minimalism or other forms of expression, such as deconstruction, or extremely complex, its purpose is to foil the emotion between people and space. The idea of produce certain relationship and time, we believe that the people at this stage the demand for mental desire has transcended the material, or material already can't satisfy the current system of survival, modernism advocates of random can be in the moment is not the only answer, we felt that we shape with the mental or is a possibility, function and material, of course, must be present a basic or an iterative. So we've been trying to do this for a couple of years, and all of the basic aesthetics seem to serve the purpose of feeling this thing.

Yiniji, what elements do you think you need to focus on when doing business design? Why is that?
Xie: The first thing we should focus on in commercial design is not the space itself, but how to better enhance the brand value, sort out and present the brand positioning. How to bring flow through design drainage and differentiated design, so that design can be directly transformed for commercial purposes. How to be forward-looking, so that business has better sustainability and viability, to extend the life cycle of design in the commercial sea. All forms of space are based on commercial purposes.

Yinji: You were invited to be the judge of The 2020 Russia Kintelegini Architectural Design Award and the 2020 LOOP Design Award. How do you feel about the role change?
Xie: Being invited to be a judge of an international competition is an affirmation of our design system and thinking. It's rare for Chinese interior designers to be a judge of an international competition. At the same time, invited Chinese judges include Mr. Li Xiaodong, professor of Architecture School of Tsinghua University, founder of Li Xiaodong Studio, and Mr. Zhou Qi, professor of Architecture School of Southeast University. Other review also contains 2011 Pritzker Prize winner Eduardo Souto DE Moura, Ed Waldo Sue, Mr DE mora, the Pritzker architecture prize winner in 2013 Toyo Ito Mr. Toyo Ito, ferrari design director Flavio Mr Manzoni, curator of Russia's winter palace Mikhail Piotrovsky Mr Marina, Pushkin Museum director Ms Loshak, Studio Fuksas co-founder Massimiliano Mr. Fuksas, and other well-known leaders in the field of art and architecture. This affirmation reminds us that we must always maintain a state of learning and a humble attitude towards design, our design road has just begun.
