Yinji: Young designers are the mainstay of design in the circle. How did you start your design path? What do you want for your future?
Gu: Designer Gu Teng did not have systematic education. When he was 8 years old, his paintings were selected for the World of Children's Art Exhibition in Shenyang, China and Turin, Italy. It was the first competition of his life, which earned Him his first prize, and his work was later collected by the local art gallery in Turin, Italy. In the fifth grade, he drew his first hand-drawn interior design based on the facade. Perspective, spatial imagination, seemed like something he was born with. "I was so young, I was just painting and I didn't have any other ideas." The state of being focused and free of distractions lasted for a long time.
In 2006, his work "Grey Fields" won the Gold Award in the Work space category of APIDA (Hong Kong) Asia Pacific Interior Design Awards. "The portfolio touched me so much that I actually felt the depth of design. Before that, I only regarded design as a hobby, but after that, I felt a strong sense of belonging to the identity of 'designer'." Since then, Design awards have been obtained almost every year, including IF Gold Award, Andrew Martin (UK) International Interior Design Award, A 'Design Award in Italy, and "Best of the Best" in German Red Dot Award. Gu Teng's works, from residences, commercial Spaces, libraries, gymnasiums, high-speed railway stations, to the renovation design of ancient canals, permeate his thoughts on life and design. Gu Teng, a designer, does not think he has lost anything by missing out on professional higher education. For design, the independent thinking and creative ability of designers is particularly important. Only bold innovation and practical implementation can maintain vitality.

Yinji: As a new designer in the industry, your works are innovative. Where do you get your inspiration from?
Gu: in GuTeng opinion, a good designer should have keen observation and judgment, because the designer is to want to solve problems by using the method of design, the development of both daily life and business, conflicts and contradictions are everywhere, requirements and rules is the driving force of the propulsion design, the word 'aesthetic placed last in the design, at least, after all, an artist is not just about aesthetics designer is immoral.
GuTeng goes to Milan at least twice a year. Take part in Milan Design Week and walk in the corner of Milan. He likes the community that can reflect the living state of urban folk houses, and he likes to find the track of people's life in the historical precipitation. Talking about his first impression of Milan, he mentioned "vagabond" without thinking. Almost every tramp has a dog at his feet, and almost every tramp has a book in his bag. "Whatever happens to the tramp, I don't think they have thin, shiny dogs." This kind of love and kindness is real and makes this city more attractive.
"Art", "culture" is a person, Gu Teng almost don't go to the art museum, the museum, the great artist's work together, it is good to hang on the wall to see their lifetime achievements, the reflection to the reason and process of these works more great, no matter to what s, he believes that only makes the person adversity and difficulties is true progress. When observation and thinking try to be more subtle, you will encounter more problems, and there is not only one way to solve the problem, so more possibilities will appear. The more you accumulate, the more solutions you will have. The whole logic has formed a habit, and you will make yourself happy in the difficult situation.
China's design or just need to stage at present, design thought and the construction of industrial system is not very balanced, the designer's responsibility is not clear, easy to slip and fall on the ground, such as public space designers like what responsibility, also has a lot of construction of the excellent design is not good, lead to the final result of extremely coarse etc. Phenomenon, is good at using industry standard to do the right design is the designer should do, the design of reasonable quality first, to poetry and the distance.
Almost all design masters or classic works in history were born in tragic conflicts. There is no reason to pay a destructive price just for an idea, so they are also lucky.
As big as a city, as small as People's Daily life, design is everywhere. For example, in the design of a spoon, the depth of the spoon head determines the capacity of the spoon, while the handle design determines the user's Angle of use. The structure looks simple, but the designer's ingenuity is hidden everywhere. "As a designer, we are in the process of discovering and learning every day. Every casual detail of our life can inspire us." In daily life, Gu Teng likes to pay attention to the content of animals and humanities, which is conducive to his reflection on life. He never buys online. In his rare spare time, he indulges himself in his own world. He spends more than two hours to watch a movie. His way of watching a movie is quite special. On the one hand, as long as he selects a movie, he will ensure that he can finish the movie without any interference from the beginning to the end of the movie, no matter how many times he has watched the selected movie. Second, he never took any chances to see a new movie that might not be good, so he could easily blurt out every line of the godfather after watching it for more than a decade, but he still had a lot of fun. "The first time I read the story, the second time I read the details, the third time I read the details, the fourth time I read the details... The 100th time can experience the plight and feelings of any role in the play, hone and think." Besides movies, Gu teng still draws whenever he can. He is usually too busy with his work, and painting is still the most relaxing way for him. He could shut himself up in his room and concentrate on painting for days. No matter how noisy the outside world is, treasure your own time and do what you really want to do.
With the strength of being himself, Gu Teng insisted on the integrity of the project from the very beginning when he entered the interior design industry. Therefore, whether it is office design, commercial design and other design projects, or architectural design projects, he and the owner in advance to negotiate, reach a full set of design consensus. "The first time I did home decoration, I would negotiate with clients and ask them to choose everything from interior design, furnishings and even tableware." This habit has persisted to this day. For example, in the design of a clubhouse, apart from the interior design, he will cover everything from cutlery, CI\VI, and even the dressing of the waiters. "I just feel that the design just shouldn't be pushed sideways, and the user experience just is complete, just in terms of the whole experience ', and in the area of design, it's just too important to just do it right than just look good."
In Gu Teng 's opinion, a good designer should think for the owner of the largest degree from the function. "For example, if you do a commercial project, no matter how good you design it, how praised you are, and it goes out of business in a year and a half, you can only leave it in people's memory. You say, is it a successful design?" "As a designer, the artistic component is one's personal attainments after meeting the demands of all projects. Fashion designers produce clothes that need to be worn first, and then they pursue personal things." It is this kind of persistence and thinking of design that makes him always seek for the solution of breadth in the professional depth of design.

Yinji: I learned that you worked for Time China before setting up your own company. Last year, you were invited to design the enterprise Pavilion for the company. What is your vision for the enterprise Pavilion and how is it different from other pavilions?
Gu: In the past, space design was mostly static, the result of "unchanging" thinking and planning. For a low-key and innovative enterprise group, "what does display mean?" is more important than "what does display mean?" It is more rational and humane to take a step back and think about the limitation of design and space than to demonstrate the omnipotence of design. As a space work for the 20th anniversary of the founding of Time China, The Time Pavilion not only builds a narrative space for enterprises, but also becomes an energetic medium. So GuTeng first broke the exact relationship between space and display, let whole space of the wall and as display function of flexible and folding screen, in which, by walking around and corresponding mobile screen, the trajectory is the core of the space motion of action of logic and elites, rather than the usual exhibition space, the spatial relationship is established, are just passive viewers, information receiver, one is the role of propaganda.

Yinji: The design of public buildings is closely related to the layout of the city, such as roads, greening, squares and the flow of people. What is the main significance of public buildings in a city or region?
Gu: For a public building, the success or failure standard should be determined by the user, not the designer or the client. The party A of public construction is naturally the government, but the government as the investor is subjective in many cases. Unlike many developers of private enterprises, especially real estate developers, they are more professional in cost control and landing capacity than the government. And the government need to record a lot of time, rather than focusing on the social value, resulting in early on, often appear some invited foreign master design of landmarks, such as the grand theatre, library, etc., after the real ground a lot of problems such as low utilization of interior space, although expensive, but quite a few can be considered the successful public projects.
In addition, the evaluation of a design, there must be commercial intervention, there is no business assessment standards, the flow of people can not explain the problem. For example, if you do a restaurant for free, the flow of people must be high, as for whether it is delicious has not been important. And the real success is not only to ensure the flow of people, but also to achieve commercial purposes, such a design project is successful.
所Therefore, for public construction, The first thing is to understand the needs of Party A, the second is to understand the time plan and cost plan, and the third is to evaluate the regional and urban nature of the project and clearly understand the functional requirements of the project. My design is not a show or a prop project. What I want to do is something practical, something that can be accepted by the public, something that can be used continuously, something that can make up for the lack of urban functionality. As for what it will look like in the end, that's not my primary concern. It took me about half a year to photograph the two public buildings in Xi 'an. The use of this half a year we also see in the eye, can say from morning to night different periods of all kinds of people, or quite lively.
