Through the plains of northern Europe, Denmark, “undulating in gentle slopes and valleys,” reveals itself, and all the way north, across the sea from Sweden and Norway, the long coastline is rich in physical landscapes.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, functionalism, which emphasizes rationality, has undergone a subtle change in Scandinavia, and as Kay Bjornsen puts it, “the lines should have a smile on them”, so that regional features with a humanistic touch have become a dominant characteristic.
In Denmark, the well-established industrial system walks side by side with craftsmanship, not only pursuing the formal expression of minimalism, but also focusing on the combination of functionality and aesthetics, and embodying the temperature of humanistic care, which endows architectural spaces or site environments with a sensibility - the quality of artisanal craftsmanship presentation, the intermingling of the five senses, and resonance of the body and the place - and thus creates a sense of belonging and autonomy with the buildings, spaces and objects that connect to our intrinsic desire for belonging, autonomy and identity.
From January 12, 2025 to January 18, 2025, on a 7-days and 6-nights journey, you can travel far and wide with YINJISPACE, exploring the nuanced Danish landscape. From Copenhagen to Gothenburg, we will communicate and exchange ideas with different social attributes such as furniture designers, artists, architects, brand owners, material researchers, media people and curators, and maybe we can get a glimpse of the aesthetic logic and social significance behind things.

Design Exchange
Among the many Danish furniture masters, Finn Juhl has to be considered a unique presence. Influenced by sculptors such as Jean Arp and Henry Moore, he met furniture maker Niels Vogel in 1937, and the two worked together for more than 20 years, creating countless classics in Danish design history, which has led to Finn Juhl being known as “the sculptor of furniture”.
Børge Mogensen is one of the pioneers of modern Danish furniture design, whose work is inspired by everyday life and aims to create high-quality, functional furniture for the general public. Under the direction of Collint, Mogensen redesigned traditional furniture and used mathematical methods to optimize their function and form.Becoming chief designer of the family business Fredericia in 1955, Mogensen's intuitive understanding of materials and eye for proportion created a series of iconic pieces that are still admired by collectors, architects, designers and museums today.
Peter Hvidt is one of the key figures in Danish modern design. He was born in Copenhagen in 1916 and studied architecture and design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Hvidt was not only a furniture designer, but also an architect, specializing in the fusion of pragmatism and minimalist aesthetics, which had a profound influence on the subsequent furniture design industry.
Jørn Utzon was a Danish architect famous for designing the iconic Sydney Opera House. Born in Copenhagen in 1918, he demonstrated a lifetime of outstanding architectural talent and innovation, with a design style that blended modernist and traditional elements and was often inspired by a multiplicity of natural environmental and cultural factors.
Founded in 2008, Norm Architects is a Copenhagen-based architectural practice with more than 15 years of international practice in the fields of residential, hospitality, industrial design and creative direction. Every project they are involved in embodies the spirit of minimalism, embracing the mind and body through haptic design and empowering the built environment with a new sensory experience. We are honored to have Norm founder Katrine Goldstein, Partner (Architecture) Peter Eland, and Partner (Furniture) Frederik Werner join us on this tour to start the design journey in Denmark.
Egeværk is a design studio based in Elsinore, Denmark, founded by Mette Bentzen and Lasse Kristensen. The duo, who received their early training in woodworking at PP Møbler, design hand-carved furniture inspired by Scandinavian landscapes and pastel colors. Many of their designs seem to be frozen in moments of change, drift and erosion, embodying the fluidity and gradual changes of the tides, or the slow-melting ice visible in glaciers, the lime deposits that form stalagmites, and the undulating movements of marine life.
Atelier CPH is a Copenhagen-based design studio founded in 2012 by decorative stylist Sara Ingemann and art director Mandy Rep. Atelier CPH is a space for artistic expression and creative development. Over the years they have worked with a variety of fashion, design and lifestyle brands, including trend research, conceptual styling, brand development and art direction.
At Natural Material Studio, located in a studio and workshop in the historic village of Tømmerup in the south of Copenhagen, Bonnie Hvillum leads a small but dedicated team with the aim of expanding the collective perception of the concept of materiality through art design and spatial installations. Through a material-driven approach, focusing on natural resources that are often overlooked or underutilized, Bonnie Hvillum explores the limitations and possibilities of materials to provide highly artistic design solutions.
Mette Barfod, is editor-in-chief of Ark Journal, which has long been one of the leading voices in Danish design. Her dedication to reflecting the long history of Danish design and combining it with best practices for contemporary lifestyles is particularly evident in her beautifully crafted design and architecture publication, Ark Journal.
Signe Byrdal Terenziani is the founder and program director of Three Days of Design, an annual design event in Copenhagen. In just a few years she has succeeded in creating an event format that puts Danish design in the spotlight on the international stage.
