Interior design studios Akin Atelier and Jorge Hrdina Architects were tasked with designing a home that reflected the owners' diverse cultural backgrounds; A couple planning to settle on Sydney's south coast, one born and raised locally, the other from Spain. They hoped to combine the laid-back spirit of Australia with a taste of medieval Spain.
The materials used in Gunnamatta House are all intended to tell a story. Within the house a series of hues are transformed in different Spaces to provide a subtle sense of separation. The kitchen is set with custom walnut and brass joinery and custom marble and quartzite countertops. This hue runs through the rest of the house. The hue also complements the sense of daily ritual in the home and is connected to the landscape and the bay.
From an interior design point of view, it is crucial to place the house in its surroundings. Gunnamatta Bay attracts those looking for a laid-back coastal lifestyle, and it is this "Australian coastal experience" that has inspired much of Gunnamatta House's interior design. Thus, the house is not only a physical memory of the owners' separate upbringing, but also a symbol of their shared life now.
Elements of Gunnamatta House echo the Australian landscape, while others represent Spanish culture and history, a combination that aims to strengthen connections between people and places. There's a sense of being grounded, like there's a sense of being transported, almost like being in two places at once.
