With a fine heritage building such as this 1885 sandstone home, designing and decorating a 21st century iteration is a high-wire act. Respect for the elegance of the architecture was key, as Arent Pyke's aimed for the sweet spot between classic and contemporary. 1885 House is undeniably grand, however for this family of five, it needed to feel relaxed, comfortable, and playful with a wow factor.
"We sought spaces conducive to the busy day-to-day life we lead with our young, active family, but also appealing to the adults in the house. It was about respecting the period features, yet injecting the fun and vitality that reflects us a family. And we wanted some wow factor.” owners of 1885 House.
Arent Pyke's clients open up their home to family and friends, regularly entertaining, so family zones, such as the children’s playroom and kitchen dining have been given the same spirit and beauty.
The artworks, palette and furnishings are soft and welcoming. There is a luxurious cosiness to the spaces, which invites lounging despite the scale of the rooms and the home's imposing heritage.
