Aesop skincare flagship store in Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan, designed by local architecture firm Case Real. Shinjuku is a busy, touristy part of Tokyo, full of bars, restaurants and neon signs. When it comes to the interior design of the store, Case Real wanted to capture what it describes as the "artificial chaos" that permeates Shinku and the natural quality of Aesop skincare products.
Case Real designed rough stucco walls for Aesop to offset the shiny stainless steel display. The studio decided to use two contrasting materials - gypsum and steel - that felt to reflect the dichotomy of nature and man made. All the soft curved walls of the store are painted with a rough cream-colored plaster, leaving a rough finish. The same plaster was applied to the shop's facade, creating a simple backdrop for Aesop's logo.
Shiny stainless steel has then been used to craft a series of lengthy display shelves that bend in line with the walls and several low-lying cabinets where extra stock can be hidden away, complete with steel handles. The metal has additionally been used to make the store's service desk, as well as a long counter inbuilt with round washbasins where customers are invited to test out products or observe demonstrations from staff.
