Situated beside the Leie River in Ghent, Belgium, Residence VDB is quite different from other residences along the river. Amid the garden-like topography of the golf course, there is a sculptural concrete apartment with an oversized open-air pool area on the ground floor and a private terrace on the roof that only connects to the master bedroom, creating a private exterior space within this boundary with spectacular views of the river and gardens.
The whole bottom layer is oriented towards the river. Most of the facade is completely transparent glass to see as much of the garden and river as possible. To gain more privacy, the wooden box-like volume that houses the pool house can be extended by sliding panels that completely hide the pool area and blur the boundary between inside and outside.
The front facade facing the street is partially enclosed by a wooden plan with two entrance doors and one door facing the lift. A ramp allows the entrance on the frame's elevated concrete slab. The night bedroom on the ground floor is fully open to the garden and is enclosed by a concrete wall facing the street and river. Each bedroom has a private terrace.
