As a contemporary take on the traditional Queenslander style, K2 house brings an effortless and linear approach to site, celebrating a shared openness with the surrounds. Joe Adsett Architects and Elm Interiors propose and optimise opportunities for flow, dissolving thresholds and creating an interconnected home that feels calm and serene.

Nestled into the dense and established leafy area of Chelmer, K2 sits as a welcomed insertion of composure and restraint. Typical to the area are the more familiar weatherboard Queenslander homes, elevated with an open under volume that allows breezes to pass through and beneath the home, cooling upward. In a modern take on that formal approach, the home is comprised of more solid elements on the upper level, with more openly operable areas integrated into the lower ground level. This openness allows for partial or full enclosure as needed due to weather, while also being able to be as open as a more traditional home. Together, Joe Adsett Architects and Elm Interiors draw inspiration from the encasing setting and context.

While there are significant departures from its muse, the materiality of timber and a linear approach carries over in a more contemporary manner. Both developed and built by Kerdic, K2 sees horizontally-aligned weatherboard panels wrap the exterior, while an emphasis on natural light and remaining open is shared throughout. A comfortable and inviting home, the spaces come together with a softness and natural textural connection. Nods to the familiar are combined with clean lines and concealed joints, resulting in detail that creates a home of relaxation and disconnection from the world.

Facilitating the openness of the volumes is a curtain wall glazing system that allows for the full extent of the glass door panels to be moved and tucked away from view allowing a free-flowing access between inside and out. Living with the surrounding greenery and landscape was integral to the home, as an extension and celebration of life in Queensland. Through visual reminders of framed views outward and the immersion of the form within such a curated setting, the home feels like it has been there for many years. The deliberate alignment of living areas and open spaces allows areas to spill out, and more passive and restorative areas are positioned in more intimate areas.
