The founder of John Wardle Architects has redesigned Kew Residence, his Melbourne Residence for 25 years, using Victorian ash trees and handmade glazed tiles from Japan. John Wardle and his wife, Susan, own the two-story house, which has been renovated several times in the past 25 years.
As the couple's adult children have grown up and moved out, the kitchen and first-floor study are the focal points of the house. For this version of Kew Garden House, the architect focused on creating space to showcase his art collection. John Wardle said, "I was particularly interested in this research, especially during confinement, because I spend almost all of my daylight time alone in this space." Here, built-in shelves form an informal showcase for the couple's ceramic art and sculpture collection.
