The Tokyo Edition Hotel

Interiors Hotels Tokyo 2020-10-09

The first EDITION hotel in Japan has opened in Tokyo. The newly opened Tokyo Toranomon, the brand's first outlet in Japan, features all the decor known to its founder Ian Schrager, combined with the minimalist and meditative style of renowned architect Kengo Kuma. When legendary New York hotelier Ian Schrager had the opportunity to open a hotel in Tokyo, he immediately contacted a man, Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.

The new hotel blends jungle, Buddhist temples and rainbow stones -- with a Japanese ambience woven into them -- with exotic creative themes that breathe new life into traditional hospitality concepts. At the ground floor entrance, dramatic black Nero Marquina marble marble walls and white-lit cross bay ceilings (coupled with ethereal sculptures by artist Mariko Mori) create a stylish urban ambience. The elevator draws visitors to the 31st floor, where the doors slide open to reveal the classic design How High the Moon, a minimalist metal mesh armchair by the late designer Shiro Kuramata. A light travertine corridor leads into the two-story hall, a jungle-like crackle filled with more than 500 plants of 25 species, from sword ferns to sea taro, in every corner.

Inspired by the layout of Buddhist temples, a row of Spaces is scattered below the lobby, beneath a kuma-style ceiling with fan-shaped wooden eaves. These include the Blue Room, with sea-blue, scallop-shaped velvet seats and views of the Tokyo Tower; Lobby Bar features a gleaming white marble Bar, shelves of glass shelves and window seats that are tightly enclosed by plants and transparent curtains. The guestrooms offer a serene retreat, with large areas of white oak, slatted wood screens, light-colored upholstery, Le Labo fixtures and oxidized bronze fixtures, gold leaf art on the walls with a touch of Japan -- and, of course, dramatic city views (each of the 15 rooms has its own outdoor planter patio).
