Le Corbusier

High Court of Punjab and Haryana

The High Court in India, designed by French architect Le Corbusier, has a beautiful building. It has a rhythmic arcade, created by an umbrella-like roof, that shades the entire building. Considering the special dignity of the judges, Le Corbusier designed a special entrance for them, through a tall portico, which sits on three huge towers painted with bright colors. Very much in keeping with the traditions of Fatehpur-Sikri's Buland Darwaza, this magnificent entrance has an awesome scale and is designed to show the majesty of the law to all who enter.

Each courthouse has a separate entrance from the square, and the elegant curved outline of the sunshade screen is intended to provide symbolic protection. However, this "metaphorical" protection proved to be highly ineffective against the heat and monsoon rains -- hence the need for a single-storey continuous corridor in front of them as a later addition. There was also insufficient space for the archives and library, even though the library deck had been taken over, so Le Corbusier agreed to design an unobtrusive, expandable annex to the north.

Each court has a brightly coloured tapestry that covers the entire back wall - 12 square metres for the main court and 8 square metres for the smaller court. Le Corbusier's views on man, earth, nature, Indian symbols and the balance of justice are all condensed into abstract geometric figures. There are also acoustic reasons. The design of these tapestries refers to the plane of the building, especially Le Corbusier's elevation of the right Angle as the basic element and order of the building. The design is based on the modular design of Le Corbusier, who used the modular design to organize the entire Capitol building and gave it all its dimensions.
