Windesheim Bridges

Eight new Bridges designed by NEXT Architects complement Windesheim's monumental manor house. They form a series of recognisable connections and seating areas along the park's walking routes. The graceful arch Bridges flickered in the landscape. The design is not a literal reconstruction, but a stylistic character that interprets the historical heritage, interprets the modern and contemporary, and connects the past with the present.

The masterplan for the historical study and renovation of the house was drafted by H+N+S Landscape Architecture. NEXT Architects designed eight new Bridges for the property, adding new layers to make the park more attractive and accessible.

Windesheim Abbey. The Windesheim estate covers an area of approximately 660 hectares and is located near the town of Windesheim in Overijssel in the Dutch region south of Zwolle. The manor dates back to the 14th century. The accompanying park was designed by Dutch landscape architect Jacob Otten Husly in 1789. At the heart of the estate are the remains of Huis Windesheim, an old manor house. The historic buildings on the site, as well as the monumental fences, Bridges, gardens and garden ornaments, are protected national monuments.

With the construction of the park Bridge, a playful layer of "Garden Jewellery" was added to Husly's romantic park design style. The eight new Bridges are important landmarks on the walking route and part of the landscape. The bridge follows the zigzagging structural shape of the path, accompanied by a carefully planned walkway design. The ruined bridge is an exception; The structure is designed as an observation deck above the moat to view the remains of the historic building. It is a unique point of view where different historical dimensions of the heritage become clearly visible.

All kinds of Bridges are in line with the characteristics of English garden architecture in style and integrate into the landscape. In the east of the estate, Bosch, traces of its rich history have largely disappeared. Two arch Bridges provide a water feature to the area, lifting passengers further above the landscape. The bridge is connected to the path structure by a smooth transition of deck and railings, allowing the landscape to blend with the bridge. To the north of the estate, the path was narrower. The bridge here is designed as a gangway over the water, with only one railing.
