This uniquely customized home in Kakapa Bay reinvents Hawaii's sanctuary in an unexpected, all-in-one, and totally modern design, located on a lava field at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Designed in a traditional Hawaii-style open Hale scheme, the project consists of seven separate pavilions that are transformed into a contemporary mixture of rich textures, tones and surfaces.
The material panels used at Kakapa Bay emphasize a deep connection to the site through lava basalt floor tiles and coral wall blocks. Collaborative projects include a lighting design by artist Michele Oka Doner, who explores the verdure nature of the volcanic island by adopting the branch shapes of the indigenous Kiawe tree. This distinctive house encapsulates an ode to the rugged coast of Kona and its owner's beloved beach culture.
