Located on a lakeside in Japan, a family hotel is designed as a continuous spiral from the entrance to the bedroom. The hotel was designed by Nikken Sekkei, a Tokyo-based architecture firm. Each step deep into the building reveals a changing view of the lake. The various environments of the lake, including ripple sound, light reflected from the surface, humidity, and thermal radiation, are also brought into the spiral shape, but are not evenly distributed due to changes in the physical distance from the surface.
Since the whole structure is an interconnected space with different elevations, there is no homogeneous environment—various areas present various thermal environments such as the fireplace warmth and the dryness of the air. Guests wander around in this atmosphere, discovering and enjoying spots they find comfortable. The building is closed during the harsh winter season to prevent any wasteful investment of energy.
