Sancho Madridejos

Chapel in Sierra La Villa

Sancho Madridejos co-designed a church and a house for his family in Cuenca, in the hills of central Spain, on a country estate with centuries-old holm oaks and truffles. The chapel developed from a single curved fold, conceptually and methodically related to that of Valleacerón. These folds need to be constructed of reinforced concrete so that they can work in a single and correct way. Likewise, structure, shape and space develop from the same form. Light allows people to appreciate in this space, to discover its character.

In the Chapel in Sierra La Villa project, the response to external stresses is complex. It is not origami, but a formalized topological expression, in structural equilibrium, that responds to these external tensions. It was conceived to have a wide entrance leading to a constricted end. A large hanging cross in the concrete cuts through the folds to create light openings facing specific directions, casting different lights throughout the day, constantly modifying the interior space bit by bit. The spatial experience is the opposite of that conveyed in the Valleacerón church.

Sancho Madridejos chose the specific location of the chapel so that it becomes a point of reference, both from the entrance to the estate and from the road leading to the estate, which rotates and rotates around the church when approaching. A house is located at the end of the path leading to the church, on the top of a hill facing a valley with cherry trees and crop fields overlooking the surrounding area. The house, which is also one of the projects, is closed to the entrance and open to the valley. Its roof is a concrete double dome that separates the two parts of the house: the public and private areas.
