Australian fashion house SIR, designed by Nikki Campbell and Sophie Coote, is celebrating its seventh anniversary with the opening of its flagship Store in Sydney, near its origins. The flagship store, designed by Tamsin Johnson, pays homage to the evolution of SIR. It is gentle and sculptural, yet unabashedly confident. The storefront offers a beautiful vista of large curved glass framed in plush Espresso brown steel by hand. This exquisite entrance pays homage to a contemporary woman with taste who was SIR's Muse.
The interior features polished concrete floors, with corian inlaid underfoot that make a "click" sound. With translucent glass blocks, the surrounding walls are spray-painted to mimic the pastel colours of The Bundi Beach house, without feeling stilted or sensitive at all. Soft grey and grey tones are mixed with beige velvet and pure cream linen, subtly contrasting with the smooth, reflective stainless steel joinery and the clear acrylic plane supported on the sculpture base.
The lighting is reductive and architectural, allowing vintage furniture pieces to take centre stage. Custom shelving on a higher square profile contrasts with soft curves and rendered fitting rooms. Details of hand-painted frames and hand-crafted metal fittings come into focus. The furniture works, mainly from the 1950s to the 1980s, add artistic and sculptural complexity to the space. The fitting rooms feature French 1950s brutalist stools, while Swiss brand De Sede's signature DS-600 modular sofa, embellised in rich chocolate-colored leather, is an undeniable star.
Beneath the sofa, a custom silk rug in caramel tones reflects the inlays throughout the Corian board. Natural stone can also be seen, from rich earthen marble to sympathetic natural travertine, adding textured and textured elements to the interior that would otherwise feel highly polished and smooth. The result is a perfect harmony of vintage, bespoke and modern elements.
