The 445.9 square meter house is located on the big island of Hawaii, on a hilltop overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the neighboring island of maui. Local grass covered the lush site and surrounded the homestead. Four wood-clad volumes define a central courtyard, drawing on the layout of traditional Hawaiian architecture.
The design also references the country's hard-ground shelters, wooden houses with sloping thatched roofs that connect to the ground. Walker Warner Architects said the project aims to balance modernity with tradition. To achieve this, it USES traditional references to modern forms and materials.
