U.lab is an interior design studio based in Seoul, South Korea, founded in 2007 by Jong-u Kim and Hyunjin Kim. The studio specializes in space image design and brand image design, combining space identity and brand identity. They excel at creating refined designs through creativity and imagination while balancing functionality.

In Master Class, Jong-u Kim, one of the founders of U.lab, shared the studio’s design philosophy and process, emphasizing the concept of “each thing in its place,” which suggests that everything has its own unique position and role. He also discussed the differences between Eastern and Western aesthetics, stressing that designers should inherit and promote traditional Asian aesthetics, especially incorporating traditional elements into modern design.

U.lab actively explores the reuse of waste materials in their projects and collaborates with clients and manufacturers to promote the use of eco-friendly materials. Although developing new materials is more costly, the studio believes it is an important aspect of design. Furthermore, U.lab pointed out that future commercial space design needs to respond more quickly to the developments of the internet, such as pop-up stores, to meet the ever-changing market demands.
